Great turnout for our May meeting! Thank you Fred for baking everyone a fab cupcake. It’s nice to see more folk coming back to the meetings. We look forward to welcoming anyone who is new to Headcases. Anticipating the first visit is always a bit stressful, not knowing what to expect. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t yet started any treatment, or are mid-treatment or have completed treatment. The same goes for friends, partners and carers.

University Hospital of North Midlands has received funding to design and build a new cancer centre which will change the way we deliver care. This will focus on the care and treatment of the whole person and not just the disease. Follow the link below to complete a short questionnaire:

Your answers will help us to understand what matters to you so we can offer whole body and soul holistic treatment. The aim is to make you feel comfortable and valued throughout your time at the centre, including your physical, emotional, social, spiritual and mental health.

We have been asked by Rachel Wilson who is a final year Speech & Language Therapy student at Royal Hospitals Trust/Liverpool University to help in her research project.
She looking at whether the employment of H&N Cancer patients has been affected by their voice quality post head and neck cancer treatment. Anyone who currently has, or has had head and neck cancer previously, and was employed (including self-employed or part time employment) at the stage of diagnosis is welcomed to participate in this study.
The research aims to further understand people’s experiences after head and neck cancer treatment, to improve current understanding and inform Speech and Language Therapy practice.

We were very happy to welcome two new friends to our meeting yesterday evening. A total of 11 of us gathered for our first meeting of 2022 at the Royal British Legion Club in Meir. Fred outlined our cash position, and we made a contribution to the Legion towards the use of their facilities each month.
Congratulations to Fred and Rita on their Anniversary! Congratulations are also due to John, on reaching his milestone.
We had a quick update on the upcoming enhancements to the Royal Stoke Cancer Centre, thanks to a generous donation from the Denise Coates Foundation. If anyone would like to comment on the plans outlined, please send your thoughts to myself and they will reach the relevant people at the Hospital. I will ensure the comments will be anonymous.

Exciting Changes afoot for the Cancer Centre at UHNM.
Funding secured for an update of the centre via the Denise Coates Fund for the enhancements to the cancer centre environment to provide holistic care.
This will also include updating some of the radiotherapy equipment
The Cancer Centre team have reviewed the use of the current space and the plan for a refurbishment of the current entrance and courtyard areas will provide:
In the next few months a steering group will be put together to look at what needs to go into the holistic rooms. This will involve consulting with interested parties to work around the best use of this new facility.

Our December meeting turned out closer to a party! Many thanks to Fred and Rita for laying on a great buffet. We raised over £50 via the raffle. Thanks to all who donated prizes. Wishing all a very Merry Christmas, and good health through the coming year and beyond.
Don’t forget that we don’t meet again till February as we traditionally have a break in January
Due to concerns about Covid 19, our Headcases Christmas Party is not happening this year. Instead, we’ll have our usual Wednesday meeting on 1st Dec. Please bring along some Christmas food, and we’ll have a small buffet. A sort of mini party if you will.
